Bali bombmaker convict seeks presidential clemency

A bombmaker convicted over the 2002 attacks on the Indonesian resort island of Bali which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, has filed for presidential clemency.<br/><br/>Zaenal Abidin, 39, also known as Sarjiyo and Sawad, was found guilty of assembling the bombs used in the nightclub attacks and was sentenced to life in prison in 2004. <br/><br/>Denpasar District Court spokesman Posma Nainggolan said Abidin is asking the president to reduce his life sentence to a shorter one. <br/><br/>The spokesman said his appeal will be submitted to the Supreme Court and then forwarded to the president this month.The Bali bombings, blamed on regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah, killed 164 foreigners, as well as 38 Indonesians.<br/><br/>Three other Islamist fanatics were executed in November 2008 for their roles in the bombings.
