The Power Minister M Veerappa Moily today said the bailout package for power distributors to be performance linked. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Mr Moily announced the setting up of two monitoring committees that will see if state electricity boards (SEBs) are complying the conditions. A day after the government approved a bailout package for debt ridden distributors, Mr Moily said the distribution companies have so far accumulated losses of 2.4 lakh crore rupees. Our correspondent reports, this is not the first time that SEBs are receiving debt restructuring, they had received packages in 2001-02 as well. One of the major riders for availing the restructuring package is that the state electricity boards will have to revise the tariffs for consumers annually, and cut down on their transmission and distribution losses by 25 per cent.
