Bahraini opposition leader returns home from exile

Bahraini Shi'ite opposition leader Hassan Meshaima returned home from self-imposed exile on Saturday. His return follows, just days after Bahrain's king pardoned him and some political prisoners in a gesture toward anti-government activists who have been protesting for two weeks. Meshaima spoke to reporters upon his arrival, calling for political reform and saying he planned to sit down with the protesters to talk about their demands. Meshaima had been among a group of Shi'ite activists on trial since October for allegedly plotting to overthrow the Bahraini government.King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa pardoned the group on Tuesday, releasing more than 20 of Meshaima's alleged co-conspirators from prison.Meanwhile, protests continued in Bahrain's capital, Manama, today, with thousands of demonstrators marching from Pearl Square, calling for the Sunni prime minister to resign. The protests have been led by the country's Shi'ite majority, who are demanding reforms from the Sunni-led government.
