Bahrain faces protest, 50 injured

In Bahrain, at least 50 people were injured when the Police opened fire on anti-regime protesters in the capital Manama on Friday. The protestors were defying a Government ban and marching toward the landmark Pearl square that had been the symbolic centre of the uprising. Country’s crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa appeared on television and promised to open national dialogue once calm returns. Earlier, angry people in the nearby village of Sitra buried the four people killed as the army enforced a tight clampdown across the capital. Thousands of mourners chanted slogans calling for the ouster of the al-Khalifa dynasty's regime. Meanwhile, hundreds of pro-regime demonstrators marched in Manama after Friday prayers, denouncing the opposition and pledging allegiance to the king. Bahrain is ruled by a royal family belonging to Sunni elite, but has a Shia majority who make up the bulk of the protesters. Gulf Cooperation Council pledged full political, economic, security, defence support to Bahrain, and expressed rejection of external interference in the Kingdom’s domestic affairs. US President Barack Obama has expressed opposition to the use of force while Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said those who did use it should be held accountable. Anti-Government demonstrations were also reported in Jordan and Yemen.
