Badaun rape case: UP CM says, fast-track court will be constituted; 3 of 7 accused arrested

Amidst outrage over the gangrape of two Dalit sisters in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today ordered the police to arrest all the accused immediately and said a fast-track court be constituted to ensure that they were duly punished. He termed the alleged gangrape and murder of the two teenage Dalit girls as unfortunate.

AIR Correspondent reports that of the eight persons wanted in the case, four including three policeman been arrested so far. Two arrested policemen have been terminated from the service and one police sub inspector has been suspended. Eight police teams have been set up to nab the culprits who are still evading arrest.

AIR correspondent reports that all major opposition parties have demanded CBI probe into the incident. A three member team of National Women Commission headed by Shamina Shafiq today visited the village of the incident and met family members of victim girls.

Expressing dissatisfaction over police action on the incident they have demanded CBI probe into the incident. Leader of the opposition in the state assembly and BSP Leader Swami Prasad Maurya, a two member team of the State Congress and a six member probe team of State BJP visited the incident site and met victims’ family members. Maurya demanded that financial assistance 25 lakhs rupees should be given to the families of the deceased.

AIR Correspondent adds that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced financial assistance of five lakhs rupees each to the families of both victims. He has also directed for providing sufficient security to the family members.

FIR has been lodged against eight persons including three policemen and five others including three named for gang rape, murder, conspiracy and under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Of them four have been arrested including two each named accused and police men. Large numbers of security persons are deployed in and around the village to maintain the peace.

Family members of deceased girls have alleged that when they went to lodge the complaint at police outpost, policemen turned them away after hurling abuses at them. It was also alleged that the policemen of the concerned police station were helpful letting the accused flee.
