Azam Khan, key witness in Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case retracts from earlier statement

In Gujarat, a key witness in Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter-Azam Khan has retracted from his earlier statement recorded by CBI and a Magistrate. In an affidavit in the special CBI court on Thursday, he alleged that CBI had extracted his statements by threatening to frame him in the Hamid Lala murder and the Popular Builders firing cases. AIR Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that in his earlier statement recorded by CBI under section 164 before the Magistrate-Azam Khan had quoted Sohrabuddin Shaikh that he was running extortion racket at the behest of police officer Abhay Chudasama. Azam Khan had also told in his earlier statement that Tulsiram Prajapati had told him that he and Sohrabuddin had gone to Hyderabad and was abducted by the Gujarat Police. Later Tulsiram was sent to Rajasthan and Sohrabuddin was killed in the encounter. But in Thursday’s affidavit, Khan said Tulsiram did not tell him anything in this regard before his death. Azam Khan is considered to be the CBI witness who gave a statement linking Sohrabuddin Shaikh with the murder of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya.
