It was on April 12, 1930 a league of Freedom fighters started to Payyannur from Kozhikkode under the leadership of K. Kelappan to participate in salt satyagraha. The event took place on April 23. Payyanur was later known as Second Bardoli. It became even more popular after the visit of Mahatma Gandhi in 1934.</span><br />
