Telecom revolution has led the country to the 21st century’s modern India and to the edge of having the 5G network. Telecom sector provides foundation for lakhs of jobs, growing incomes and global connectivity.
”
”From allowing Indian software companies to become globally competitive in the 1990s to enable daily wage workers to increase their incomes, as well as transforming the lives of farmers and creating a world-class technology ecosystem, telecom’s impact can be seen across the country. Department of Telecommunications, DoT was established in 1985 to groom telecom services. In 1986, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) were set up to handle domestic and international services. Telecom sector was opened to private sector investment as part of Government’s 1991 Liberalisation policy. Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was created in 1997 while the New telecom policy was announced in 1999 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2000, DoT’s service arm, was corporatized and renamed as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Mobile services began with 2G cellular network and rapidly progressed to 3G and 4G.
”
”BSNL Chairman and Managing Director, Pravin Kumar Purwar says, telecommunication has supported the socioeconomic development of India and has played a significant role to narrow down the rural-urban digital divide.
”
”In 2008, MTNL launched the first 3G telecom services in India. While 2G enabled digital phone calls and messaging, 3G enabled internet data connectivity on mobile devices, allowing for mobile internet access as well as phone calls and texting. In 2012, 4G brought faster data speeds and lower latency rates in the country, which allowed online video-streaming to be possible on mobile phones.
”
”India is now all set for 5G with higher mobile internet speeds and lower latency rates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that 5G would enable solutions such as e-health, connected vehicles, more-immersive augmented reality and metaverse experiences, life-saving use cases, and advanced mobile cloud gaming, among others.
”
”5G will boost Digital Literacy Programmes and accessible and affordable e-Healthcare through telemedicine.
