Avalanche claims 12 jawans in J&K; Death toll feared to rise

In Jammu and Kashmir, 12 jawans were killed as avalanches struck two army camps in Ganderbal and Bandipora districts of Kashmir Valley. Defence spokesman told AIR that nine bodies of jawan have been recovered so far from Dawar in Bandipora district. 15 jawans have also been rescued. Beside army, local administration is also engaged in rescue operations.

The death toll is feared to rise as more troopers are believed to be under the avalanche. A massive avalanche struck the Brigade headquarters of the army in Dawar village of Gurez sub-division of Bandipora district last night.

In another incident at Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, 3 troopers of army were killed when an avalanche hit an army camp last night.Meanwhile, the met department forecasted more snow and rain in the higher ranges of the valley.
