Australian Open Tennis: Sania Mirza & Barbora Strycova advance into 3rd round of Women's doubles category

In Australian Open Tennis, Sania Mirza and her partner Barbora Strycova advanced into the third round of the Women's doubles category. The fourth seed Indo-Czech pair defeated Aussie-China team of Samantha Stosur and Shuai Zhang 6-1,6-4 in the second round. In another match, India's Rohan Bopanna and his new partner Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay were knocked out of the men's doubles. 15th seeds Bopanna and Cuevas lost to Australia's Alex Bolt and Bradley Mousley 6-2, 6-7, 4-6 in the second round of the season's first Grand Slam. Their exit puts an end to the Indian challenge in the men's doubles, after Leander Paes and partner Andre Sa of Brazil, as well as the all-Indian team of Purav Raja and Divij Sharan, crashed out in the first round yesterday. In Women's singles, World No.1 Angelique Kerber sailed into the fourth round. The German defeated Kristyna Pliskova of Czech Republic in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. Kerber will meet CoCo Vandeweghe on Sunday. In another match, American CoCo Vandeweghe ousted Canada's Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to save a fourth-round berth. Eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova cruised into the fourth round of the Women's singles after defeating former World No 1 Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 5-7, 9-7. The Russian will face her country mate 24th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in quarterfinals. Pavlyuchenkova outplayed 11th seed Elina Svitolina 7-5,4-6,6-3. In the Mixed Doubles category, the top seeded American duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Mike Bryan sailed into the second round after defeating Australia pair of Arina Rodionova and John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 4-6. Earlier, in the biggest upset of the Australian open, defending Champion and World No.2 Novak Djkovic of Serbia bowed out of the Grand Slam. The 14-times grand slam champion Rafael Nadal stormed into the third round of the Australian Open defeating Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
