The season's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open tennis tournament, kicks off in Melbourne today, with the opening round matches of the Men's Singles and Women's Singles categories. Today, top seeds like defending champion Serbia's Novak Djokovic, Spaniard David Ferrer, Russian Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland will be seen in action, while Somdev Devvarman will begin the Indian campaign. He will take on Bjorn Phau of Germany in the Men's Singles first round. Besides Somdev, other Indian players participating are, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, with their respective partners in the Men's Doubles, and Sania Mirza with her American team-mate Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the Women's Doubles. The Doubles matches will be played later in the tournament. The Mixed Doubles schedule is yet to be declared.
