Australian Open: Sharapova, Kerber & Wawrinka storm into 2nd round

In Australian Open Tennis, former champions Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber and Stanislas Wawrinka stormed into the second round today, but it was curtains for Canadian Milos Raonic. Sharapova, still working her way back from a 15-month ban, defeated Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-4, while Kerber beat Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-0, 6-4. World number one Simona Halep also progressed to the second round with a battling 7-6, 6-1 win over teenage wildcard Destanee Aiava. In Men's Singles, ninth seed Wawrinka, returning from injury, survived a fightback from Ricardas Berankis to enter the second round. The Swiss won 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. Raonic, the 22nd seed, suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in seven years when he was stunned by Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-7. The second-seeded Swiss Roger Federer will begin his campaign later today.
