Sharapova, still working her way back from a 15-month ban, defeated Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-4, while Kerber beat Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-0, 6-4. World number one Simona Halep also progressed to the second round with a battling 7-6, 6-1 win over teenage wildcard Destanee Aiava. In Men's Singles, ninth seed Wawrinka, returning from injury, survived a fightback from Ricardas Berankis to enter the second round. The Swiss won 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. Raonic, the 22nd seed, suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in seven years when he was stunned by Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-7. The second-seeded Swiss Roger Federer will begin his campaign later today.
