Australia lifted the Cricket World Cup for the fifth time. In the final played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, retiring captain Michael Clarke and his Men defeated neighbors and co-hosts of the tournament, New Zealand by 7 wickets to dash their hopes of a maiden World title. The Aussies, first, made a mockery of Kiwi Skipper Brendon McCullum's decision to bat first. They skittled the Black Caps out for 183 in the 45th over courtesy the fiery pace trio of James Faulkner, Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc. Faulkner and Johnson bagged 3 wickets each, while Starc claimed two.The Kangaroos, then, had no difficulty with the bat as they easily overhauled the target in the 34th over with 7 wickets in hand. Clarke, making his final ODI appearance, top scored with 74, while Steven Smith made an unbeaten 56.James Faulkner was adjudged man of the match, while the man of the series award went to Mitchell Starc. He finished the tournament with 22 wickets.AIR correspondent reports that it was a perfect farewell for Clarke as he has now joined Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh in the elite group of Australia's World Cup winning captains.Clarke dedicated the World Cup to the late Phillip Hughes whose tragic death during a domestic game shook the cricketing world.
