The Australian government has unveiled plans to impose tax in carbon emissions for the country's most polluters. The Prime Minister Julia Gillard said that from next year carbon-dioxide emissions will be taxed at almost 25 dollars a ton. The Prime Minister says, the carbon tax will cut Australia's emissions by a 160 million tonns within a decade or the equivalent of taking 45 million cars off the roads. 500 of the country's worst polluters will be forced to pay for each ton of carbon dioxide they emits. Opponents of the tax say it will harm industry, send jobs offshore and increase the cost of living for ordinary Australians. But Prime Minister said reporters that Australians will be compensated for the cost through government family payments, pension boosts and income tax cuts. She says she has the numbers in Parliament to pass the legislation.
