Australia: Queensland braces for massive cyclone

Authorities in Australia have evacuated residents and tourists from the coastal areas of Queensland State as the flood-ravaged state braces for a massive tropical storm. Cyclone Yasi is expected to hit the Australian coast late tomorrow or early Thursday, and bring more rain to the already saturated region. Meteorologists predict the cyclone will hit between the tourist hub of Cairns and the town of Innisfail, but they have warned that its winds and rains may be felt hundreds of kilometers inland. Officials have called on residents of low-lying and waterfront areas to relocate their families during the storm. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said cyclone Yasi could be deadly, and she has warned people to take it seriously. The storm, with winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour, is over the Coral Sea. Queensland is still reeling from a record deluge and floods that have destroyed at least 30,000 homes and businesses and killed more than 30 people since the rains started in November.
