Australia fight back to edge Brazil 3-2

In the Fifa Women's World Cup Football, Australia fought back to beat Brazil 3-2 in Group C play at Montpellier, France last night.

After a shock loss to Italy in their opening game, the Aussies were facing the threat of elimination in the group stage and they were going down 2-0 in the first half. But a brilliant fightback secured a 3-2 win to keep alive Australia's chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

The result means three teams in Group C are on three points, with Italy — playing Jamaica today– having played one fewer games than Australia and Brazil.
In a Group B encounter, China defeated World Cup debutants South Africa in Paris 1-0 thanks to a Li Ying volley minutes before half-time.

China's victory meant Germany — which has won its opening two games — qualify for the last 16. China and Spain, level on three points, will play each other on Monday in a match which will decide second place.

While Group A leaders France, who have won two from two, also progressed to the knockout stages. As 24 teams are divided into six groups, the top two of each group and the four best third-placers qualify for the round of 16.
