Australia has banned the export of live cattle to 11 abattoirs in Indonesia. The ban follows an Australian television expose that revealed that the animals were being slaughtered in cruel and inhumane ways. The program showed cattle being beaten and gouged and dying slow, painful deaths as their throats were slashed as many as 10 times. Indonesia is Australia's largest market for live cattle exports. More than half a million cattle were exported to the country last year, in trade valued at about 300 million dollars. Oil prices rose in Asian trade today. New York's main contract, light sweet crude for July delivery, gained 35 cents to 100.94 USD a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for July delivery was up 58 cents at 115.26 USD.
