Swiss Roger Federer today advanced to the third round of the Australian Open Tennis Championship, the first Grand Slam of the season. Federer, chasing his fifth Australian Open title, edged past Italian Bolelli 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Rafael Nadal of Spain beat T.Smyczek of the Untied States 6-2, 3-6, 6-7, 6-3,7-5 in a five setter to move to the third round. Andy Murray of Britain, also progressed to the third round with straight sets victory over Marinko Matosevic while P. Kohlschreiber beat B. Tomic to join the victors in the third round.In the women's singles Russian Maria Sharapova over powered Alexadra Panova 6-1, 4-6,7-5. Ekateriana Makarova beat Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-2, 6-4 . Shuai Peng of China beat Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-1.Sania Mirza and Leander Paes, with their teammates, today advanced to the second round of the Australian Open . In the Women's Doubles first round, second seeds, Sania and Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei, sailed past the Argentine-Swiss team of Maria Irigoyen and Romina Oprandi, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.In the Men's Doubles, the Indo-South African pair of Leander Paes and Raven Klaasen defeated the American duo of Rajeev Ram and Scott Lipsky, 6-4, 7-6.
