Aurangabad arms haul case: Abu Jundal, six others sentenced for life

Mumbai's Special MCOCA court today awarded life imprisonment to seven of the convicts, including key Lashkar-e-Toiba operative Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal in the 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case. Pronouncing the sentence, designated Judge Shrikant Anekar said all the seven convicts will serve imprisonment till their natural life. These include Mohammed Aamir Sheikh, Billal Ahmed, Sayed Akif, Afroz Khan, Mohammed Aslam Kashmiri and Faizal Ataur Rehman.<br/><br/>Out of the remaining five convicts, the court sentenced two convicts, namely Mohammed Mujaffar Tanvir and Dr Mohammed Sharif to 14 years imprisonment while three others were sent to eight years of jail.<br/><br/>All the convicts have also been fined Rs.20,000 each.<br/>While pronouncing the sentence, the court said it had considered the gravity of offence, lack of remorse from the accused and potential effect on common man. The court also observed that the accused had a common thought process and wanted to wage "jihad".<br/><br/>Last week, the court had convicted 12 persons and acquitted eight others in the case.

Aurangabad arms haul case: Abu Jundal, six others sentenced for life

26/11 key plotter Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal and six others have been sentenced for life in the 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case. The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court in Mumbai pronounced the sentence today. It also sentenced 2 other convicts in the case to 14 years and 3 to 8 years.<br/><br/>The court had convicted the 12 last week. They were found guilty under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and for waging war against the nation besides other sections under IPC. The court had acquitted eight in the case, while trial of two accused was separated.<br/><br/>The court had lifted MCOCA charges over all the 22 as the charges were not proved. In May 2006, a Maharashtra ATS team had arrested three terror suspects from a highway near Aurangabad. RDX, AK-47 rifles and large number of bullets were seized from their possession.
