Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi today. Various issues including the national reconciliation process underway in Myanmar figured in the meeting. The two leaders also agreed that people-to-people relations were important apart from holding discussions about greater cooperation between the Parliaments and judiciaries of the two countries.
Earlier in the day, the visiting dignitary visited Rajghat and Shanti Van to lay wreaths at the Samadhis of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Ms. Suu Kyi will deliver Nehru Memorial lecture on the birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru in the evening. She will call on Vice President and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, apart from visiting her alma mater, Lady Sri Ram College in South Delhi.
Ms. Suu Kyi ,who is on a five-day visit to India, reached New Delhi Tuesday evening. Ahead of her visit to India, she cautioned New Delhi about being over optimistic about political changes in her country. Ms. Suu Kyi had said that the businessmen of her country are keen to invest in India to help further widen the bilateral trade. Ms. Suu Kyi has come to India on the invitation of Indian government.
The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh visited Myanmar in May this year to strengthen trade links. 12 Agreements including security, development of border areas, trade and transportation were inked between the two governments during Dr. Singh's visit.
During her stay in India, Ms. Suu Kyi will be travelling to Bangalore to visit Indian Institute of Science and Infosys campus and also visit some rural areas of Andhra Pradesh.
