The latest attempt by the Church of England's two most senior clerics to avert a split over the issue of women Bishops has failed. The governing body of the Church the general Synod narrowly rejected a compromise which would have given conservative power shares headed by women Bishops access to male alternatives. They were backed by a majority of the houses of bishops and laity, but not of the House of Clergy, meaning they fell.
