Attacks on Indian youth regrettable: Australian PM

Amid allegations of racism, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today said the recent attacks on Indian youths are regrettable. He , however insisted that these should be seen in the context of broader incidences of violence against locals and students of other ethnic groups. Talking to reporters in Adelaide, he said, these are difficult matters for both India and Australia. Nearly 100 cases of attacks on Indians, mostly students, were reported in Australia in 2009 as against 17 incidents of assaults in 2008. Mr Rudd said, the government is working in a practical and effective way to tackle the matter. He said, the vast majority of Indian students in Australia are embraced entirely by the Australian community, get on with their business of studying hard, getting their qualifications and going off to do whatever they want to do with their lives.Meanwhile, Australia is planning to make immigration rules tougher so that only genuine Indian students go there for higher studies. It has also commissioned an external review to see how to tighten the process of weeding out private educational institutions that do not measure up to quality levels. Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese told PTI in the capital that Australia has introduced legislation in Parliament to do that. He said, a very large number of people go to Australia to train in institutions that are not run by government adding that they fall short of quality and are being closed down. He said there is a mismatch between the profile of many of the applicants and the courses they were opting for in Australia.
