Gujarat stands fifth in atrocities against scheduled castes while UP, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan are ahead of the state. Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Buta Singh revealed this at Gandhinagar. Addressing the press conference at the State capital after the review meeting with state officials Mr.Buta Singh said that the number of atrocity cases is very high, while the conviction rate is very low in the state. He said the officials of the state government have been asked to provide details regarding the various issues relating to the Schedule Castes. <br/>In reply to a question, Singh said that the caste-based census is a welcome decision as that will provide important data of SC, ST and OBCs for the effective implementation of the welfare schemes of Government. <br/>
