ATP Challenger tournament: Japanese Sugita wins singles title

Japanese Yuichi Sugita has lifted the singles title at the ATP Challenger tournament. In the summit clash in Pune today, he scored a close 6-7 6-4 6-4 win over Spaniard Adrain Melendez-Maceiras. 144th ranked and fourth seed Sugita battled hard for two hours and 54 minutes before prevailing over the sixth seeded Adrain. Sugita is also the Asian Games bronze medalist. The finals had been postponed by a day due to unseasonal rains that hit Pune. However, it turned out to be a thriller with both players matching each other stroke for stroke.
