The athletics season begins with the first leg of the Indian Grand Prix at Patiala tomorrow. A host of the country's top athletes will be seen in action in the event with the World Championships and 2012 London Olympics berths up for grabs. Most of the campers at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala are set to take part in the first of the two-leg Indian Grand Prix series though a few have opted out due to injury-related issues. The meet will have 16 disciplines, eight each in men's and women's sections. Track events comprise of 100 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 110 metres Hurdles in both men's and women's sections, while the field events would be made up of high jump, long jump, triple jump and discus throw. Other track and field events will be held in the second leg of the series at the same venue on May 7. The athletes will have their first chance to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics and for the World Championships in Korea. The athletes will also have a chance to stake their claim to represent the country in the three legs of Asian Grand Prix to be held in China on May 22, 26 and 29. Athletics Federation of India has extended invitation to all its state units and Boards to send their athletes at the meet.
