Athletes start arriving in New Delhi for CWG

After agonising over the preparedness of the Common Wealth Games, the mood in Delhi brightened up ton Friday with athletes from abroad started arriving in the city. A 22 member contingent from England was the first to come. More teams are expected to reach Delhi on Friday night. A few Australian athletes have checked into the Village despite previous concerns about hygiene. The first batch of Scottish athletes will be reaching on Saturday. The contingent will comprise archery, lawn bowls, shooting, tennis and weightlifting teams.Top notch sporting Countries Australia, New Zealand and Canada have confirmed their participation. After a visit to the Games Village, Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief Perry Crosswhite, who was one of the strongest critics of the preparations of the mega event, said his country is happy now with the facilities. He said that their athletes are looking forward to the Games beginning October 3.As the organisers of Games are racing against time to finish pending work, the Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennel on Friday visited the Games village to review the preparations. He said considerable improvements have been made there. Later, he met Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekar to take stock of the preparations. In an hour-long meeting Fennell is understood to have discussed issues relating to concerns of various participating countries over sanitation and other problems in the Games village.The Prime Minister had directed that everything should be done to ensure the success of the games. Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan said Dr Manmohan Singh took personal initiative to see no stone unturned to make the mega event a grand success. AIR correspondent reports on the city mood in the city.Mike Fennel himself acknowledged that there is much improvement now in the Games village, which will witness a tiny world. To bring cheer to the organisers, the incessant monsoon rain has also stopped. Water in Yamuna is receding. The focus now is on conducting a world class competition as athletes will vie for honours in the track and field. Once the games move on, the people of Delhi and all over the country may forget the agonising past few months.
