In Meghalaya, at least seven persons were killed due to heavy rains and floods in South West Garo Hills district today. The incessant rains for the last three days in Garo Hills have raised the fear of floods worsening in the region.
Our correspondent reports that more than 100 villages were inundated and over one lakh persons have been affected with flood. The Meteorological department has warned heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places with extremely heavy rains at isolated places in the state in the next 24 hours.
The Simsang, Brahmaputra and its tributary, Jinjiram River is flowing near the danger mark. District administration has asked the people living in low lying areas to remain alert and move to safer places.
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) has set up two relief camps and carrying out search and rescue operations, besides providing ration and relief material. The heavy rains for the past three days have led to flooding in the Ganol River badly affecting agriculture and livestock. .
