In Pakistan, 20 people were killed and 115 injured on Thursday when a group of heavily armed Taliban militants detonated an explosives-laden truck at the office of the Crime Investigation Department in Karachi. The Department is spearheading the drive against terrorists. The attackers initially exchanged fire with guards outside the office located in a high security zone. The powerful blast destroyed the facade of the office and reduced the nearby Civil Lines police station to rubble. Officials told the media that the dead included several policemen and security personnel. Geo News channel reported that the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the blast and warned it would carry out more attacks. On Wednesday, the Crime Investigation Department had arrested several militants, including six members of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, as part of an ongoing crackdown on terrorism.
