Astrosat satellite to be launched next year

Astrosat satellite will be launched by the end of next year. Speaking at Prof. Chandrasekhar Centenary Conference in Bangalore today, Dr. Kasturirangan, Member (Science) of Planning Commission said the satellite will play a crucial role in studying x-ray production, black hole and origin of radiation. He informed that satellite will have ultraviolet payload, hard and soft x-ray telescope with multi wave length capabilities. He felt that our sophisticated scientific facilities and research labs should be thrown open to talented younger generation. Speaking about Thirty Meter Telescope under development, he felt India could build 550 mirrors on 1.2 meter portion of this telescope in a cost effective way.
