Indian Industry body – ASSOCHAM has advocated for improvement in agriculture export zone, AEZ. India ranks dismally low in global trade despite being a major producer of agriculture products. An official release said with food and agriculture exports totalling 15.6 billion dollars, India's share is a meager 1.6 per cent of the total global trade. Agriculture and related activities account for employment to 60 per cent of the population in the country, 19 per cent of the GDP and only 9 per cent of total exports. The release further said, the focus should be on commodities where India hasmarketable surplus and competitive strength in global markets. Total investments in AEZs across 20 states so far have been worth 1,098 crore with exports valued at 10,690 crore rupees.AIR correspondent adds that an AEZ is a specific geographic region demarcated for setting up agri-based processing industries, mainly for exports. The AEZ concept has the potential to improve agriculture output and quality besides reducing post-harvest losses and up gradation of technology, farmers' skills and income.
