Industry body Assocham has asked the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to set up centralised bio-medical treatment plants to deal with 3,400 tonnes of medical waste generated annually in the NCR region. The chamber said, Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad collectively generate over 3,400 tonnes of medical waste annually. Most of these remain untreated and dumped with municipal waste and thus causing serious health and environment hazard. It said, while these places provide good medical facilities, disposal of medical waste hardly exists. Thus policy guidelines are called for to ensure that not only government owned hospitals but nursing homes and diagnostic centres engage themselves in safe disposal of their waste.
