Assembly Polls: Elaborate arrangements made for counting of votes on Friday, says CEC

The results of the Assembly polls in five states of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are expected by noon on Friday. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said, an elaborate three tier security arrangement has been put in place for the counting which would start at 8 AM on Friday. Mr Qureshi said the entire exercise, which would decide the fate of several political heavyweights, would be videographed to prevent any malpractice. Mr Quraishi said, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal witnessed the highest turnout in history of 78.80 per cent and 84.46 per cent respectively. The CEC said, All India Radio's contribution has been enormous in creating awareness among people to participate in the election process.In the backdrop of several political parties launching their own TV channels for publicity during elections, Mr. Quraishi said, the Election Commission is working on guidelines for the electronic media to ensure a level playing field.
