In Assam, eminent litterateur, Jnanpith awardee Indira Goswami expired at Guwahati this morning. She was 70. Hospital superintendent Ramen Talukdar said Goswami breathed her last at 7.45 this morning. Popularly known as ‘Mamoni Roysom Goswami’, the litterateur was battling for life at the intensive care unit of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for the last nine months. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has offered condolence on the demise of the litterateur. In a message Mr. Gogoi said the death of Indira Goswami has created a vacuum in the literary field in the State.She is famous for her novels which include ‘The Moth Eaten Howdah of a Tusker’, ‘Pages Stained with Blood’, ‘The Man from Chinnamasta’ and research on Ramayani studies-Ramayana from Ganga to Brahmaputra. Mamoni Roysom Goswami is also well known for her attempts to structure social change, both through her writings and through her role as a mediator between the banned ultra outfit- United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Central Government.
