Assam wants central forces to tackle Maoists

Assam Government has requested the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to include seven districts of the State under the Integrated Action Plan to counter Maoist activities. This was stated in a memorandum submitted by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi during the Prime Minister’s visit to Guwahati yesterday.The State Government said the growing trend of left-wing extremism need to be contained before it became a menace. The memorandum said Maoist activities have been increasing in Upper Assam districts because of their strategic location. The Prime Minister was urged to deploy at least 125 companies of Central paramilitary forces to counter the activities of both insurgent groups and Maoists. Presently there are only 97 companies of Central forces in Assam.
