Assam violence: Massive operation launched against militants

In Assam, large scale operation has been launched by security forces against militants involved in recent killings. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S N Singh told AIR that the perpetrators of violence have been identified and their pursuit is on. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday said that operation against National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sangbijit group) will be launched. He also said that help of Bhutan and Myanmar would also be taken to flush out the terrorists from bordering areas. Senior officials said that toughest action would be taken against the top cadres of the banned outfit.

Army Chief General Dalbir Singh today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi this morning. The Home Minister reviewed with him the situation in Assam, arising from violence in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar. Talking to reporters after the meeting, General Singh said that Army will definitely intensify the operation in Assam.

Normal life has been affected in many areas due to the bandh called by several organizations protesting the recent killings. Public vehicles are off the roads in many areas including Guwahati. Shops and business establishments remain closed. Security has been beefed up to avoid any untoward incident. 77 people including women and children have lost their lives in recent violence in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Chirang districts. Several injured persons are undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, day curfew has been relaxed in Baska and Kokrajhar districts today but security forces are maintaining a strict vigil in affected areas. The Army is also staging flag march.
