Assam Violence: Govt seeks additional 10 companies of central security forces

Assam government has sought additional 10 companies of central security forces along with 5 units of Cobra battalion to be deployed in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, BTAD. State Home Secretary Mukti Gogoi said that the Centre has assured to consider the demand. He also said that Assam government will soon send letter to the Centre asking for NIA inquiry into the recent violence. Home Commissioner GD Tripathi said that two teams from CID will go to Baksa today to expedite the investigation into the Narayanguri killings.

So far, 22 people have lost their lives in Baksa district alone. IGP, LR Bishnoi said that no fresh incident of violence has been reported during the past 36 hours. He said around 350 people have taken shelter at a relief camp in Baksa district. Indefinite curfew is on in Baksa district, while it was relaxed for 3 hours yesterday in Kokrajhar and Chirang. On the allegation that around 20 people are still missing in Baksa district, Mr. Bishnoi said that no missing report has been filed so far.

Security forces have arrested at least 30 persons including a senior forest officer in the connection with violence. The army, central security forces, Quick Response Teams along with police are maintaining a constant vigil in BTAD and neighboring areas.

In Assam, Criminal Investigation Department of state police is investigating the killings of innocent people in Baksa district during recent violence. Additional DGP (CID) Mukesh Sahay said that CID team led by a DSP level officer is in Baksa to expedite the probe of Narayanguri carnage in which 19 people were killed. Sources in the state government also said that priority has been given to bring normalcy in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, BTAD and expeditious investigation of cases to bring the culprits to the book.

So far 30 people have been arrested. No untoward incident has been reported during the last 48 hours. Curfew has been relaxed for 6 hours in Chirang district from 10 am. But it is continuing in Baksa and Kokrajhar districts. Around 500 people have taken shelter at a relief camp in Baksa district. Food items are being given to them.

In another development, an encounter has been in Sonitpur district between Bodo militants and security forces. Details are awaited.
