Assam violence: CBI team starts investigation

The CBI team which was entrusted to probe the Assam violence has started the investigation. A team from the CBI led by Deputy Inspector General Anurag Garg and Superintendent of Police Rakesh Rathi visited Magurimari – where suspended constable Mohibur Islam alias Ratul and All Assam Minority Students Union leader Siddique Ali were shot at on July 19, and Joypur Namapara, where four Bodo youths were killed on July 20, sparking off the riots.

The team later visited Joypur Namapara where four Bodo youths were butchered on July 20. Today's visit is the first after a two-member CBI scout team, comprising special director (Guwahati zone) K. Saleem Ali and DIG Satish Golcha, had visited the violence-affected areas of Kokrajhar district on 10th of August.

The team’s aim was to get first-hand information about the situation for registration of CBI cases. The CBI has constituted a 15 member team to probe the Assam violence. The CBI team had set up office at the Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd complex at Dhaligaon in Chirang district, from where they will conduct investigations into seven cases related to the riots in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District and Dhubri district. The CBI has taken up the cases, which were earlier registered by Assam police, on the state government’s request and after requisite notifications were issued by the Centre.
