Assam violence: calm in few districts; PM to visit Kokrajhar tomorrow

The situation in three violence hit districts of Assam remained calm with no fresh incident of violence reported from anywhere.

State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the situation is improving in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts.

He blamed the miscreants for the violence in the state. He urged all to maintain peace and harmony. Authorities in Kokrajhar district have relaxed curfew from 8 AM to 6 PM today.

In the meantime, the death toll has risen to 44, while 10 people are still missing. The Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia of six lakh rupees each to the next of the kin of those killed in the violence.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh will visit violence hit Kokrajhar district tomorrow to take stock of the situation. He will also review the measures taken by the state government to control the situation.
