In Assam, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) is likely to open 20 new Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in the current financial year. KGBV is a scheme to provide elementary level quality and life skilled education to girl children of the age group 10 to 14 years belonging to SC, ST, OBC and Minority communities in a residential mode.Official sources said that 2000 girls have already been enrolled in 37 such schools in 17 districts of the state. Encouraged by the success, SSA is now planning to send proposal to Centre to set up a KGBV in all the Educationally Backward Blocks.Initiated by the ministry of Human Resource Development, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas have been established in the Educationally Backward Blocks. The blocks where rural female literacy is below the national average and gender gap in literacy more than the national average are known as Educationally Backward Blocks. Assam has 81 number of such blocks. Out of 2000 enrolled students; around 700 belong to the minorities.In all KGBVs, students are provided vocational education like weaving, knitting, doll making tailoring and embroidery. Some of the quality products were sold through exhibitions and the earning credited to the account of the particular school. Apart from class room activities, they are also imparted self defence training, which helped them in building.
