Assam to depute assistant to Centre’s interlocutor for peace talks with militant groups

Assam Chief Minister Mr.Tarun Gogoi has said that his Government was ready to depute an assistant to the Centre’s interlocutor to speed up the process for peace talks with the militant groups in Assam.<br/><br/>The Centre has appointed former Intelligence Bureau Director Mr. P.C. Haldar to study the ground realities of initiating peace talks with the militant groups in the State.<br/><br/>Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Thursday, Mr. Gogoi said that the prevailing situation in the State was an indication that the peace process with the ULFA could be started without the participation of the outfit’s elusive ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah.<br/><br/>He said if Paresh Baruah comes forward for peace talks, Government’s door is open for him. The Chief Minister said some ULFA leaders were in Bangladesh and Myanmar, and as such it was very difficult to get feedback from them on peace talks.<br/><br/>AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that the Union Home Minister Mr. P.Chidambaram who reviewed the internal security of the State on Tuesday last had entrusted the responsibility to the Chief Minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi to start process for a political dialogue with the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). And, accordingly, a Cabinet decision was taken immediately on the next day itself in this regard.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, reacting on the Government decision, the jailed ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said any decision on its participation in peace dialogue would be taken by the outfit’s general council.
