In Assam, the State Election Authority has recommended re-poll in six voting centres following reports of stray violence and electoral mal- practices during the second phase of polling held for 64 Assembly segments yesterday. Of these, four centres are located at Udiana Lower Primary School in Rangiya constituency in Kamrup district. Repolling has also been recommended in one each centre at Bhawanipur and Udalguri Assembly constituencies. The full Election Commission in its sitting this evening is likely to issue a final order in this regard.Addressing a press conference at Dispur this afternoon, the Chief Electoral Officer of the State Hemanta Narzary said a record number of 78.60 per cent voters exercised their franchise in second phase. Highest polling of 90.5 per cent was recorded at Mankachar constituency in Dhubri district bordering Bangladesh. While lowest voter turn out was recorded at Guwahati East constituency with 56.34 per cent. In the first phase of polls held for 62 Assembly segments on 4th April, an estimated 73.04 per cent voters exercised their franchise. Mr. Narzary said this was the highest ever poll percentage record in the State compared to past elections.The Chief Electoral Officer said after completion of voting for both the phases almost peacefully, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are being kept under heavy security in 48 strong room locations of the state where counting will be taken up on 13th of the next month. One company of paramilitary forces besides one agent of each of the contesting candidates are guarding the strong rooms round-the-clock. CCTV cameras are also installed to monitor the situation in the strong rooms.
