In Assam, the most popular harvest festival – the Rongali Bihu- has been celebrated across the State with pomp and gaiety today. The week-long festival marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year -‘Bohaag’. Our Correspondent reports that Rongali Bihu begins on the last day of the Assamese month Chaitra. Today is being observed as Goru Bihu. Assamese people worship cows and other domesticated animals with traditional manner and by bathing them in rivers and ponds on this day. People also worship their agricultural instruments and crops. In the evening, bihu functions are being held where the people from all communities assimilate together irrespective of caste and creed in the open fields and stages for all-round merry-making by exhibiting impressive ‘Bihu Husori’ dance and rich traditional Assamese culture. People also exchange greetings, new clothes and gifts among the near and dear ones as a part of the Rongali Bihu festival. Baisakhi melas are also being organized across the State to exhibit the local agricultural and handloom products.
