In Assam, the continued protest blockade programme launched by several organizations for the last eight days has severely affected the construction works of the 2000-megawatt mega dam project over the Subansiri River at Gerukamukh. The organizations have launched the blockade to stop transportation of machinery and other construction materials by the executing agency, National Hydro-electrical Power Corporation (NHPC), to the project site at Gerukamukh. Official reports said works on the dam site have been completely halted since Tuesday following non-availability of materials. Meanwhile, the Lakhimpur district authorities have started talks with the anti- dam protesting groups to end the blockade. The project is scheduled to be completed by December next year. The protestors have raised concerns about the safety and large-scale downstream impact in Assam’s Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts from the mega project.
