Assam poll: CEC arrives in Guwahati to review preparedness

The Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, accompanied by two other Election Commissioners- H.S. Brahma and V. S. Sampath arrived in Guwahati Wednesday afternoon on a two-day visit to review the preparations for Assam Assembly elections. The elections to the 126-member state legislature are due before May this year. AIR Correspondent reports, the three-member Commission is holding meetings with political parties, top civil and police officials besides influential organisations and teachers to obtain their views for smooth conduct of the forthcoming elections. Earlier, talking to reporters the Chief Election Commissioner Mr. Quraishi said the Commission shall take into consideration all viewpoints before finalising the poll schedule for the State. Both the ruling Congress party and the main opposition, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), have demanded that elections in the State be held before Bohag Bihu – the Assamese New Year – beginning April 14. Meanwhile, the State Government has submitted a formal proposal to the Election Commission suggesting fixing of poll dates in two phases tentatively on 4th and 9th April next.
