In Assam, Gandhi Jayanti is observed across state with due solemnity. Several state ministers paid homage at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, state government has started social audit of Gram Panchayats to check corruption and to ensure transparency in Panchayti Raj Institutions.AIR correspondent reports, the main function was held in Guwahati where former minister and Agriculture adviser to Chief Minister Bhumidhar Barman inaugurated the programme.Mr.Barman urged the people to follow Gandhi’s principle of truth and non-violence for the development of the society. Veteran Gandhian Natwar Thakkar among others were felicitated in the programme. Agriculture minister Nilmani Sen Deka inaugurated a life size statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Nalbari. The All Bodo Student Union observed the day by holding rallies against violence at Baska. Mass prayer and competitions were also organized across the state.
