In Assam, the militant outfit-Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) has declared unilateral ceasefire paving the way for peace talks with the Government. The outfit’s self-styled publicity secretary Danid L. Hmar announced this before their cadres somewhere in a dense forest near the district headquarter Halflong today. He said the step has been taken responding to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s latest appeal to the militant outfits of the North-East to shun violence and come for negotiations. The outfit announced not to indulge in any kind of violence any more in the interest of creating a congenial atmosphere for peace talks. It also decided to approach the Government for a formal dialogue to settle their issues. AIR Correspondent reports that the outfit was involved in underground activities for more than a decade in North Cachar Hills, Barak Valley and Assam-Manipur border areas.
