In Assam, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has launched Iron Sucrose Injection programme in 8 districts to reduce maternal mortality ratio (MMR). Official sources said around 500 women had been administered the injection so far since October 2011.The state has recorded 381 MMR per lakh as per recent data.In India, Assam has the highest decline rate in the country in terms of maternal mortality. In 2005-2006, the state had recorded 480 MMR per lakh whereas at present it stood at 381. Anemia is considered as one of the main cause of maternal death.Official reports said that around 69 per cent married women aged 15 to 49 years found to have anemia. The Iron Sucrose injection is used across the world in treatment of iron deficiency anemia. State NRHM has initiated the programme to further bring down the mortality ration. The injection is being administered at FRU, District Hospitals and medical colleges as prescribed by gynecologists to those pregnant women who are suffering from severe anemia. The programme is likely to cover all districts by next year.
