Assam: Kuki militant outfits declare unilateral ceasefire

In Assam, two Kuki militant outfits involving in underground activities in North Cachar Hill district have declared unilateral ceasefire, paving the way for peace talks with the Government.Speaking to newsmen in remote Somgpijang near Halflong on Thursday, the leaders of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) and Kuki Liberation Organization (KLO) said, the decision has been taken keeping in mind the interests and welfare of Kuki tribal people living in Assam.Both the Manipur-originated outfits were spreading their underground activities in the North Cachar hill district since the last ten years.AIR Correspondent reports that the step of the outfits, assumes significance following Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s appeal to the militant groups of the North-East to shun violence and come forward for negotiations with the Government during his visit to Manipur this week.
