The Assam Government has achieved success in the implementation of National Afforestation Programme (NAP) through Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC).State Chief Conservator of Forest and Nodal Officer of the programme MM Sharma said NAP came as a major forestry programme of the Central Government in which afforestation and other related activities would be implemented through public participation.Under this programme, over 47 lakh men-days were generated in the last eight years in Assam.The afforestation programme aims at increasing forest cover and meeting the needs of the locals. Special attention is being given to the regeneration of degraded forest areas and lands adjoining to forest, national parks, sanctuaries and other protected areas. The state has five national parks and 18 sanctuaries. As per official data, Assam has recorded over 35 per cent green area.Assam has 1,043 Joint Forest Management Committees under 30 Forest Development Agency. All adult members of the village constitute the General Body of JFMC. Activities like construction of roads, community hall, plantation and water supply are being carried out by the JFMC.Local people are engaged to carry out these works, thus creating employment opportunity under the affroestion programme. Also, all the benefits derived from the non-timber forest produce are being shared with local people.
