In Assam, hundreds of villages are still reeling under flood water particularly in Goalpara, Sonitpur,Barpeta district and Majuli Island though the Brahmaputra and its a few tributaries started to recede.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced an ex-gratia of 1 lakh rupees to the kin of each of those killed in flood and landslides from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. At least 40 people lost their lives in flood and landslide. Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh also announced an ex gratia of 1 lakh rupees to the kin of each of those killed in flood. UPA Chairperson Ms.Sonia Gandhi is likely to visit the state soon to take a stoke of the situation.The Chief Minister also instructed his ministerial colleagues to monitor the relief and rescue operations.Rescue operation is likely to begin in Goalpara, Majuli and Sonitpur as thousands of people are stranded in these areas.16 NDRF teams have been deployed so far in relief and rescue operations. Boats and helicopters are also being pressed into services. K N Singh, member of the National Disaster Response Authority will visit the state today to take a stoke of the situation.Official sources in Guwahati said that he is likely to meet the senior officials of the state government and also to visit Dhemaji and Lakhimpur.The Prime Minister already instructed all concerned to extend all possible help to the state government in the relief operations.
